5th LD

Defending Our Majorities

The 5th LD could be a bell-weather for our State this year, with big implications for our priorities in the Legislature: prior to 2018, a mix of Republicans and anti-labor Democrats represented the 5th.

Since then, we’ve elected two labor champions, Lisa Callan & Bill Ramos, who’ve been bold in standing with us even in our toughest fights.

Now well funded, anti-union Republicans are returning to challenge them and flip the 5th. Losing either of them would mean losing two votes on Safe Staffing, Cleaning Workers and our other priorities.

The 5th is also represented by Sen. Mark Mullet, an anti-union Democrats who we fought hard with Ingrid Anderson to unseat. By keeping keep Reps. Callan & Ramos elected, the chances are much greater that a pro-Labor candidate running against him in his next election.

Why We Care

If Republicans take back these seats, we’ll lose votes on Safe Staffing & could even lose our pro-union majority in the House.

Laying the groundwork for a pro-union Senate – by defending our two champions in the 5th LD, we increase the chances a pro-union candidate can run and win in 2024 for Senate.

The Democratic incumbents are champions for our values – Rep. Callan even worked with us to pass a Surgical Smoke Safety bill, which requires Hospitals to ensure all staff are protected from dangerous surgical smoke.
