Anders Ibsen - Tacoma Mayor

Bio

I was born and raised in Tacoma, and am a product of our schools. As a kid who struggled in traditional education, I especially thrived with the unique and innovative pathway offered by the Tacoma School Of The Arts. It was this feeling of adults taking a chance on me that planted the seeds of wanting to give back to my hometown.

After finishing college – and navigating to find work during the start of the Great Recession – I served three years as a volunteer Elected Supervisor with the Pierce County Conservation District, where I helped expand the number of neighborhood community gardens

It was at the end of my term on the Conservation District in 2011 when – at the age of 25 – I ran for my neighborhood’s open City Council seat. It was an uphill battle. No one thought a kid who hadn’t “waited his turn” would have a chance. But I was passionate about creating a path for my neighbors who felt left behind. I walked my district four times over, personally visiting over 20,000 doors. I campaigned on the issues my neighbors told me were the most important. And I won.

During my first term, we addressed a staggering budget deficit that threatened core city services like street repair and public safety, worked to improve the transparency of city government processes, and stood up for working families in our community. Hearing the stories of struggling Tacomans only fueled my inner fire more to make change on their behalf.

However, my advocacy made me powerful enemies from entrenched, monied interest groups, and in 2015 I overcame the largest ever Independent Expenditure effort at the time, funded by corporate special interests, and won re-election with an even larger margin.

Taking this momentum to Council, I pushed significant progressive policies forward, including:  Participatory Budgeting to improve transparency and citizen involvement; incentivizing electric vehicles and environmental protections; and growing our economy by bringing together our hospitals, universities, and other “anchor institutions.”

To this day, I still have a heart full of gratitude for having had those 8 years to help my neighbors and to push our city to innovate.

Now as the Managing Broker and owner of a high-volume real estate team at Windermere, I help military families moving into Pierce County, as well as serving my old neighborhood. Navigating the twin crises of COVID and high inflation & interest rates has been both humbling and educational.  I’m proud to have built a successful business, and have contributed over $25,000 from my own commission to charities benefitting low-income and homeless families.

It was right after my time on Council that I achieved my greatest accomplishment of all: fatherhood! My son Wally was born two years after my last term on City Council, and the experience has been as wonderful as it is challenging. Parenting a toddler is not for the faint of heart! When I feel the warmth of my 3 year old’s beaming smile, I think of the world I want to leave even more beautiful for him.

When I’m not working, I am a homebody who likes to play with my rescue pittie mix Henrik; read a good book or relax with friends at a local establishment like Peaks & Pints or the Antique Sandwich Company; and hike with my boy in one of Tacoma’s many treasured green spaces.

cITY COUNCIL We are proud to endorse:

Latasha Palmer

Bio

I’m running for City Council to create an inclusive, sustainable, trustworthy city for residents and businesses by reclaiming housing for all, restoring our neighborhoods as the heart of Tacoma, and promoting jobs that protect people and the planet.

Latasha understands the frustration of navigating broken systems and feeling powerless in the face of loved ones’ struggles—she’s been there herself.

When Latasha’s children lost their father to mental illness, it was more than a personal tragedy. It exposed how systems fail people like him—people of color, children of immigrants, and veterans neglected by institutions that should support them. Now the current Administration is attempting to dismantle these already fragile institutions, and Congress is doing nothing to stop them. The well-being of Tacoma residents depends on bold local and state leaders.

Latasha is a stability and security advocate who is primed and ready for this challenge. She has long been dedicated to promoting a Tacoma where economic security, personal safety, housing stability, and climate resilience aren’t privileges awarded to the few, but guarantees we all create for ourselves.

That’s why Latasha is running for Tacoma City Council: because real security means empowered communities shaping their futures through-

Reclaiming Housing for All

Tacoma’s housing crisis is real. Families are struggling, and homelessness is rising. But affordable housing shouldn’t just be a temporary fix—it has to be permanent. We need real solutions that keep money in our community, like working with local organizations to build community-owned housing that lasts.

Restoring Block Power

Tacoma needs a government and policing system that listens and serves its people. We need neighborhood block hubs that empower voices, foster safety through connection and trust, and create collaboration that ensures our resources are abundant and our basic needs met. Latasha fought for policing accountability and stronger neighborhood councils, and will keep fighting to ensure your voice is heard at City Hall.

Jobs that Protect People and the Planet

We’re done putting profit before people. Tacoma deserves a just transition to green jobs that protect our planet and lift up our communities. Let’s bring in industries that respect our workers and our environment, and make sure every person has a chance to be healthy and happy.

Not a career politician, Latasha is a mother, organizer, and working-class woman who knows how to fight for a better future. Her decisions, from running a small business to advocating for community voices on Tacoma’s Charter Review committee, have all been made to prepare her to lead this fight.

As a lifelong resident of Tacoma who loves her city, Latasha believes Tacoma can be a city where every resident feels secure—in their homes, opportunities, communities, and government. She believes in security through empowered communities.

But Latasha can’t do this alone. She needs your support—for this campaign and the movement for community empowerment. Real change starts with all of us.

Let’s reclaim our voice and power to make Tacoma the city we deserve!

Why Now?

Latasha understands that Tacoma faces urgent challenges that demand bold, inclusive leadership. She believes that our democracy needs policies that build genuine community connections to address critical issues. She is poised to take full advantage of the unique, exciting opportunity for change due to an overhaul of city representatives and employees.
